Do you have a pretty resume? No? That doesn’t matter, right? Wrong.
Ugly resumes. We’ve made ‘em, we’ve received ‘em, we’ve rejected ‘em. We’re all guilty. However, having an “ugly” resume is a sure-fire way to get rejected right off the bat. Think of that simple piece of paper as your modern day handshake. With the use of Indeed, monster.com or email, hiring managers rarely, if ever, meet you prior to seeing your resume. All they have to go on is this piece that can either make you shine or fail miserably. And, with the average hiring manager spending approximately 6 seconds on their initial evaluation, it needs to shine. So, shine.
Ok, make me shine then!
While resume review is a very objective process and the industry and position to which you are applying should be taken into consideration, there are a few non-negotiables that remain fairly standard across the board. Among these are the following “Seven Deadly Sins of Resume Building”:
1.) Using paragraphs instead of bullets
The hiring manager is typically inundated with hundreds of resumes. Do you really think they have time to read your autobiography? Do them a favor and organize important, applicable information into bullets. If it doesn’t apply or is redundant, cut it completely.
2.) Having an unprofessional email address
We’re talking to you bballer88@emailaddress.com. Please, please, please keep it simple. Use your name. Use your initials. Use something that screams “I’m an adult.” While you’re at it, update your yahoo, msn, aol or hotmail to something more…this century.
3.) Grammar and/or spelling errors
This may seem like a “duh,” but you’d be surprised at the number of resumes we receive that have just been rushed through, left unchecked, and submitted with a plethora of errors throughout the document. Slow down, take your time. Don’t hit send until you’ve reviewed you work. Don’t just rely on your word processor’s spellcheck. Read through it yourself. Does everything sound correct?
4.) Including a picture
Just don’t. It’s weird (and oh, the pictures we’ve seen…) It’ll also distract the hiring manager from those precious moments they have to review the actual content of your resume. Remember, 6 seconds…
5.) Using too many fluff words
This kind of fits in with #1, but it’s worth mentioning again. The hiring manager does not have time for unrelated fluff. By including a ton of it, you’re detracting from the general message. Be concise and to the point.
6.) Including too much information
Don’t let the most important messages get lost amongst minute, often unrelated details. Tailor your resume to fit the position. Highlight the important aspects of your experience and personality as they relate to the position.
7.) Having excessive, unexplained employment gaps
Took a year off to volunteer in a war-torn country? Say so! Don’t make a hiring manager wonder over extended or frequent gaps in employment. You may have the same credentials as the next person they look at, but if your competition doesn’t have the same blank spots or has a positive explanation for the periods of unemployment, they’re most likely going to be viewed more favorably.
In addition to the “Seven Deadlies” above, also remember to maintain a close eye on the design of your resume. Content and layout aren’t the only factors to consider.
You don’t have to be a graphic designer to pull off an attractive layout. Just make sure that the document reads cleanly, is interesting to the eye (but not too busy), and has a professional appearance. When in doubt, Google is a great resource for examples of attractive resumes. After you’ve completed your resume, ask a friend to provide candid feedback.
