In the Fast Lane
With unemployment at its lowest since 1969, hiring is becoming a competitive sport. The window of opportunity is shorter, the applicant pool is smaller, and the offers from competitors are strong. So, what can you do about it?
The good news is that the outlook isn’t all bleak. People love small business. They love family feels and the idea of being a name and face vs a number.
According to this article on inc.com:
“ZipRecruiter’s respondents most often cited the close-knit, familial feel of small companies to explain their preference. Other motivations include “the notion of access to leaders, of seeing more of the business, the ability to learn, and the ability to see the impact that their job has on the enterprise,” says Bob Rosone, managing director with Deloitte Private at Deloitte, which recently surveyed private companies about their workforces. “That is a pretty impressive value proposition for someone weighing a fast-growth innovative company against a larger corporate enterprise.”
With this in mind, you’re already at an advantage when against corporate America. But, where do you stack up against your competitors? Depends. What’s your response time?
That’s right. Response time. It makes all the difference.
Love Jim or Monica and think they’d be a great fit? Sorry, but so did the office down the street — which is why they hired them both this afternoon. You get Bob. Wait, Bob’s taken? Karen. You get Karen.*
We’re here to help, though, so below are a few examples of appropriate response time between hiring “touches.”
- Receive a qualified resume? Schedule a phone screen interview as soon as possible
- Phone screen was great? Contact the candidate within 24 hours to schedule an in-person interview.
- In person was even better? Awesome! Set up a 2nd interview to occur within the week.
- Finally, the second interview was fantastic and s/he really hit it off with everyone they encountered? Make an offer in this interview.
Go forth and good luck!
