“Wear” and Why: A Guide to Interview Style Etiquette
“You will never get a second chance to make a good first impression.” We’ve all heard it. In fact, we’ve said it before in this blog post. While there’s more to a first impression than what meets the eye, what meets the eye is still incredibly important. Specifically, your attire. We’ve heard time and time again about candidates who were rockstars on the phone and simply missed the mark in dressing interview appropriate. So, without further ado, let’s chat wardrobe.
As you might imagine, every industry and company is unique in its guidelines or requirements for employee dress. However, it is typically accepted as good form to overdress for an interview — and certainly a safer bet than underdressing. With this in mind, we suggest that candidates wear business professional attire for every interview — especially within the financial industry. Professional attire almost always means:
- Suit, with tie, for men, paired with a solid-colored dress shirt
- Suits, pant suit or business dresses with jacket for women
- Neutral colors and conservative footwear; and
- Well-groomed with ironed clothes and a close attention to detail
